One theory of the origin of the name Izu is that it comes from the term "yu izu kuni (province where the hot water gushes)" showing how renowned it is as a treasure house of spas, as a therapeutic bath.

1Atami City Tourism Association
The Oyu Geyser is a venerable natural hot spring famous worldwide. The water gushes out 6 times every 24 hours. Alternating powerful gushes of water and steam are emitted, shaking the ground.

The Ito Spa Town is one of the three major spa in Japan along with Beppu and Atami. Its abundant water ouput is about 32,000 liters/minute. This town boasts the most abundant supply of gushing water in the Kanto Region.

The mixed outdoor bath by the seashore is famous as one of the major tourist spots in Izu. Sitting in the hot water on the same level as the ocean horizon imparts a feeling of freedom.

4Kawazu Tourist Association
The Mine Hot Springs Water Spout well continues to spout water more than 80 years since November 22 1926, when it emitted a jet of water more than 50m above the ground accompanied by an explosive sound.
This artesian well emits up to 30m jets of 100ºC water, at a rate of 600 liters/minute.

Shimoda Spa boasts abundant hot water. Of course it provides lodging facilities, but also footbaths and handbaths you can enjoy for free. You can refresh your spirits as you explore its historical sites.

The Aono River which flows through the Shimokamo Spa is famous for the long-lasting blooms on its approximately 800 early cherry trees, which create a thick pink blanket of blooms every February. It is the site of spa for non-guests, lodgings and road stations.

7Matsuzaki town Tourist Association
In Matsuzaki Town in the summer, you can enjoy the outdoor baths near the seacoast in Iwachi, Ishibu, and Kumomi. Bathing suits are required.

8Nishiizu town Tourist Association
The Tombolo in Dogashima is a natural monument of Shizuoka Prefecture. Normally ocean surface, it forms a 30 meter wide rock dune linking the sea coast with Sanshiro-Jima island when the tide is out, a phenomena linking an island with the mainland, rarely seen anywhere in the world.

9Mishima Tourist Association
Gokurakuyu is a natural hot spring for leisurely soak in Mishima. About 10 baths and saunas make your body and mind relaxed. In addition, there is Takekura Hot Spring in Mishima, whose “red hot water” is rich in iron.

10Kannami town Tourist Association
Hatake Spa and Komanoyu Spa are spa hotels featuring rustic scenery. This is the only National Hot Spring Health Resort which the Ministry of the Environment has designated on the Tokaido. Long a popular therapeutic bath, its waters effecively treat hypertension, external injuries, and neuralgia.

A spa with a 1,300 year history, its waters gush out at more than 100 spots. Mildly irritating, it is gentle on the skin, and has attracted attention as spa water which people can drink. You can enjoy bathing while looking at Mt. Fuji.

12Izu City Tourist Association
Rich scenery and the human feeling of the Amagi Spa Town nurtured the spirits of many writers, creating many famous works including "The Izu Dancer" by Yasunari Kawabata and "Shirobamba" by Yasushi Inoue, who spent his youth in the region.

13Numazu Tourist Information Center
The Ganyudo Ferry Boat which local people have long used as a means of travel linking Ganyudo with the land near the Port of Namazu, was revived in 1997. You can travel leisurely up the Kano River savoring the mood of the region.
